Down off the hill, San Bernardino is a different job entirely. Wood burning is occasional rather than structural — most fireplaces here are lit a handful of times a winter — so creosote is rarely the headline problem. What we deal with instead is age and seismic movement. Almost every expensive chimney problem starts as a cheap one at the top. The crown is the sloped masonry slab that sheds water off the chimney's shoulders; when it cracks — and thin, unreinforced mortar-wash crowns crack early — water runs into the brick and the flue instead of off them. Freeze-thaw then does the rest, spalling brick faces, washing out mortar joints and separating tile. A missing cap adds direct rain into the flue, plus birds, squirrels and nesting debris that block it outright. Replacing a cap and sealing a crown is the least costly work on the chimney; a rebuild caused by ten years of skipping it is among the most expensive.
