Down off the hill, San Bernardino is a different job entirely. Wood burning is occasional rather than structural — most fireplaces here are lit a handful of times a winter — so creosote is rarely the headline problem. What we deal with instead is age and seismic movement. The liner is the only thing between combustion gas and the structure of the house. When clay tile cracks — from a flue fire, from settlement, or simply from age — the flue is no longer a sealed passage, and hot gas and carbon monoxide can reach framing and wall cavities through the gap. Unlined masonry chimneys, common in older housing, never had that protection in the first place. Relining also fixes a quieter problem: an oversized flue. A modern high-efficiency appliance vented into a flue built for an open fireplace runs cool, condenses, and produces creosote and acidic moisture far faster than it should. Sizing the liner to the appliance is as much of the job as installing it.
