Chimney Cap & Crown Repair for Crestline Homeowners
Crestline is our home town, and it is the kind of place that keeps a chimney company honest. The village sits just above 4,600 feet on the western end of the Rim of the World, and a large share of the housing stock went up between the 1920s and the 1960s as weekend cabins for families driving up from Los Angeles. Those cabins were built to be occupied a dozen weekends a year, and many of them are now occupied year round. The chimneys have not been upgraded to match. We still regularly open up single-wythe brick stacks with no liner at all, mortar-wash crowns that cracked decades ago, and smoke chambers that have never been parged. Add a burning season that runs from October into April, a freeze-thaw cycle that works on the masonry every night the temperature drops through 32 degrees, and households that burn wood as real heat rather than as atmosphere, and you get chimneys that accumulate creosote faster than almost anywhere in Southern California.
Elevation through Crestline runs roughly 4,600 to 5,200 feet, which puts it squarely in the worst band for freeze-thaw damage: enough winter to cycle repeatedly through freezing, not enough sustained cold to stay frozen. That is what splits crowns and pops brick faces here. Access is its own factor. Many Valley of Enchantment and Cedarpines Park lots are steep and narrow, with cabins set below road level and roof pitches that need proper fall protection rather than a ladder and optimism. Work on structures in the county's mountain area falls under San Bernardino County building and fire requirements, and the Old Fire burn footprint still shapes what rebuilt versus original construction you find on any given street.
Almost every expensive chimney problem starts as a cheap one at the top. The crown is the sloped masonry slab that sheds water off the chimney's shoulders; when it cracks — and thin, unreinforced mortar-wash crowns crack early — water runs into the brick and the flue instead of off them. Freeze-thaw then does the rest, spalling brick faces, washing out mortar joints and separating tile. A missing cap adds direct rain into the flue, plus birds, squirrels and nesting debris that block it outright. Replacing a cap and sealing a crown is the least costly work on the chimney; a rebuild caused by ten years of skipping it is among the most expensive.

Why Crestline Homeowners Choose Us
Stainless caps that last
Stainless mesh and lid with a lifetime-rated body, sized to the flue and mechanically fixed — not a galvanised cap that rusts through in a few winters.
Spark arrestor screening
Mesh sized to stop embers leaving the flue and to keep birds, squirrels and nesting material out of it.
Multi-flue caps
One fabricated cap covering the whole crown where a chimney carries several flues, which also protects the crown surface itself.
Crown resurfacing or rebuild
Cracked crowns are resurfaced with a flexible crown coating; failed ones are cut out and recast properly, with an overhang and drip edge.
Correct overhang and slope
A rebuilt crown gets the slope and the projecting drip edge that throws water clear of the brick, which a flush mortar wash never does.
Photographed before and after
The top of a chimney is the one place a homeowner cannot check. You get the photographs of what it looked like and what it looks like now.

Our Crestline Service Process
Roof-level assessment
Crown condition, cap fit, flue tile projection and flashing are checked and photographed at the top rather than assessed from the ground.
Scope the fix
Resurfacing versus recasting is decided on the actual crack pattern and thickness — a coating over a structurally failed crown is money wasted.
Remove and prepare
Failed crown material or an old cap is removed and the surface is cleaned back to sound masonry.
Rebuild or resurface
The crown is recast with slope and overhang, or resurfaced with a flexible coating that moves with the masonry instead of cracking again.
Fit the cap
A stainless cap sized to the flue is mechanically fixed, with arrestor mesh in place.
Final photographs
Completed work photographed from the roof and sent with the invoice.

No. Crestline is where we are based — our shop is on Pyramid Drive — so there is no travel surcharge for anywhere in the village, Valley of Enchantment, Crest Park, Cedarpines Park or around Lake Gregory. We are usually the closest chimney company to your house by a considerable margin.
It is the single most common finding we make in Crestline. A lot of the original cabin chimneys here are unlined single-wythe brick, which was acceptable when the place saw a few fires a winter and is not acceptable for a house that now burns all season. It does not automatically mean an emergency, but it does mean you need a Level 2 inspection with a camera scan before you keep burning, so you know what condition the masonry is actually in.
It is the highest-value part on the chimney for the money. Without one, rain falls directly down the flue onto the smoke shelf and damper, animals nest in the passage, and embers can leave the top. Caps cost a fraction of what water damage inside the flue costs to correct.
