Down off the hill, San Bernardino is a different job entirely. Dryer lint is highly combustible, and a dryer pushing hot air through a restricted duct is a well-documented ignition source — failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires. The risk builds quietly: as lint narrows the duct, the dryer runs longer to finish a load, which means more heat for longer in a duct that is already lined with fuel. Long runs, flexible foil transition hose, crushed elbows behind the machine and a termination flap held open with packed lint all accelerate it. The signs are easy to read once you know them — loads taking two cycles, a hot laundry room, a damp smell — and they usually appear well before anything dangerous happens.
