The baseline, and why it is only a baseline
NFPA 211 says a chimney should be inspected every year regardless of use, and swept whenever that inspection finds enough buildup to justify it. The accepted trigger is about an eighth of an inch of creosote. That is the standard, and for a household that lights a dozen fires a winter it usually works out to one visit a year.
The phrase doing the real work in that sentence is 'as needed'. Two houses on the same street in Twin Peaks can need completely different service intervals, and the difference is rarely how conscientious the owners are. It is elevation, wood, and where the flue runs.
What actually drives buildup
Creosote is what is left when wood gas leaves the fire unburned and condenses on a cooler flue wall. Four things decide how fast that happens:
- How much you burn. A cabin heated with wood from October to April is in a different category from a weekend fireplace, and it is not close.
- Wood moisture. Unseasoned wood burns cool and smoky, and cool smoke deposits far more creosote than a hot clean fire. This is the single biggest thing you control.
- Air supply. Damping a fire down to hold it overnight starves it of oxygen and drops the flue temperature. It is the classic route to hard glazed creosote.
- Flue temperature. A cold flue condenses creosote out of the smoke before it can leave. This is where mountain houses get caught out.
Why elevation changes the answer
The burning season here runs far longer than it does in the valley. In Crestline you are lighting fires from October into April. In Running Springs at 6,100 feet it starts earlier and finishes later, and in Green Valley Lake at 7,200 feet longer still. More burning days means more deposits, on a simple linear basis.
Thinner air also weakens draft slightly, which matters more than most people expect. A flue that draws adequately at sea level draws marginally less well up here, and marginal draft means smoke lingers in the flue longer and cools further before it exits.
Then there is the chimney's position. A great many mountain cabins were built with the chimney running up the outside of the downhill or north face, because that was the easy place to put it. An exterior masonry stack on the cold side of a house keeps flue gas cool for its entire run. Homeowners in Twin Peaks and parts of Crestline routinely burn well-seasoned wood, build hot fires, and still find heavy third-stage glazing — and the reason is the chimney's position, not anything they are doing wrong.
A realistic schedule
Rather than a single rule, here is what we actually recommend by household type:
- Occasional fireplace, a dozen fires a winter, interior chimney: inspect annually, sweep roughly every other year based on what the inspection finds.
- Regular fireplace use through the season: inspect and sweep annually, before the season rather than during it.
- Wood stove or insert used as real heat: sweep before the season and have it checked mid-season the first year, so we can measure your actual accumulation rate rather than guess at it.
- Any chimney on a cold exterior wall: treat it as one category more demanding than its usage suggests.
After the first year we will know your chimney's real rate and can tell you honestly whether the mid-season check is necessary or a waste of your money. We would rather tell you that you do not need a second sweep than sell you one.
Signs you should not wait
Book sooner than your schedule says if you notice any of these:
- Smoke rolling back into the room when you light a fire
- A sharp acrid smell from the fireplace on warm or humid days
- Black flaky crust or shiny tar-like deposits visible in the smoke chamber
- Fires that are hard to start or will not hold a flame
- Scratching, chirping or nesting debris audible inside the flue
- You have just bought the house and have no record of a sweep
The shiny tar-like deposit is the one to take most seriously. That is third-stage glazed creosote, it ignites around 450°F, and a flue fire burns well past 2,000°F, which is far more than clay tile is built to survive.

For occasional use, generally yes. For a household burning wood as real heat through a long mountain season it often is not, particularly if the chimney runs up an exterior wall. The inspection tells you which you are, and after the first year we can advise from your actual accumulation rather than a rule of thumb.
Hot fires with seasoned wood deposit far less creosote than smouldering ones, so good burning habits genuinely extend the interval. They do not eliminate deposits, and they do nothing about animal nests, debris or a cracked tile — which is why the inspection is annual regardless.
It still needs inspecting. Unused flues are where blockages and animal nests accumulate unnoticed, and if the same chimney also vents a furnace or water heater, that flue is working every day whether anyone thinks about it or not.
