Chimney Sweeping for Redlands Homeowners

Redlands has the most interesting chimneys in our service area and the ones that most reward doing properly. The citrus boom of the 1890s through the 1920s left the city with an exceptional stock of Victorian, Craftsman and Mission Revival houses, and a great many of them still have their original masonry chimneys — tall, decorative, structurally integral to the elevation, and built with soft lime-based mortar rather than modern Portland mixes. That last detail is the one that gets these chimneys damaged. Repointing a hundred-year-old chimney with hard modern mortar reverses the relationship the wall was designed around: the mortar becomes stronger than the brick, so movement and moisture start destroying the brick faces instead of the joints, and the damage becomes irreversible. Matching mortar strength to the original is not a heritage nicety here. It is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that quietly ruins the masonry.

Soft historic lime mortar is the defining technical issue in the older districts, and mortar matching matters more here than anywhere else we work — strength first, then profile and colour. Many of these chimneys are also decorative and structurally tied into the elevation, so a partial rebuild has to reproduce the original coursing and detailing rather than simply restore function. Properties in the historic districts may be subject to preservation review for exterior alterations, which is worth establishing before work starts. Unlined original flues are common, and interior relining preserves the exterior appearance while making the chimney genuinely usable again.

Creosote is what is left when wood gas leaves the fire unburned and condenses on a cooler flue wall. It starts as a light soot you can brush off, dries into a flaky crust, and — if the flue runs cold, the wood is wet, or the fires are damped down overnight — hardens into a glazed tar that behaves like a fuel lining the inside of the chimney. Glazed creosote ignites around 450°F, and a flue fire burns well past 2,000°F, which is far more than clay tile liners are built to survive. Most tile cracks from a chimney fire, and most homeowners never knew they had one. Sweeping removes the fuel before it can do that, and the inspection that comes with it is what tells you whether last season already did damage.
