Rimforest is small, and it is high — sitting right on the crest of the ridge at around 5,700 feet where Highway 18 reaches the rim and the ground drops away toward the valley. That exposure is the whole story for chimneys here. There is no shelter on the ridge line, and the chimneys take wind, driven rain and wind-loaded snow directly, from the side rather than from above.
