Crestline is our home town, and it is the kind of place that keeps a chimney company honest. The village sits just above 4,600 feet on the western end of the Rim of the World, and a large share of the housing stock went up between the 1920s and the 1960s as weekend cabins for families driving up from Los Angeles. Elevation through Crestline runs roughly 4,600 to 5,200 feet, which puts it squarely in the worst band for freeze-thaw damage: enough winter to cycle repeatedly through freezing, not enough sustained cold to stay frozen. That is what splits crowns and pops brick faces here. Access is its own factor. Many Valley of Enchantment and Cedarpines Park lots are steep and narrow, with cabins set below road level and roof pitches that need proper fall protection rather than a ladder and optimism. Work on structures in the county's mountain area falls under San Bernardino County building and fire requirements, and the Old Fire burn footprint still shapes what rebuilt versus original construction you find on any given street.

Creosote is what is left when wood gas leaves the fire unburned and condenses on a cooler flue wall. It starts as a light soot you can brush off, dries into a flaky crust, and — if the flue runs cold, the wood is wet, or the fires are damped down overnight — hardens into a glazed tar that behaves like a fuel lining the inside of the chimney. Glazed creosote ignites around 450°F, and a flue fire burns well past 2,000°F, which is far more than clay tile liners are built to survive. Most tile cracks from a chimney fire, and most homeowners never knew they had one. Sweeping removes the fuel before it can do that, and the inspection that comes with it is what tells you whether last season already did damage.
